One way or the other we're going to make history.
Well, as the title says one way or the other we Americans are going to make history this election season. We are either going to have our first Black President or our first Woman Vice President. Individuals involved aside, I have to comment on what a great leap forward this is for our country.
We as a nation have been so hypocritical about this in the past and it's about time we got off of our high horse. The color of your skin or the particular location of your reproductive organs does not predicate your ability to do or not do something. What matters is your ability or inability to perform. If you are a purple hermaphrodite and are the best one for the job, well you've got my vote. Conversely you can be the biggest flag waving, politically correct baby kisser out there and not be good at the job and presto no vote.
People today have got to stop voting for people just because everyone else is doing so. We've got to stop being sheep, be the danged sheep dogs and lead the way. We all need to educate ourselves on the issues and vote responsibly.
Do I have opinions on the candidates? Oh you bet. Obama's speeches give me goosebumps and leave me wondering "where's the beef". McCain leaves me worrying that if someone flings poo at us we will nuke them. Basically I'm not happy with the given choices and I look forward to debating them here.

McCain is going to be
McCain is going to be another Bush don't you know. Bush only has an approval rating of 30%, so that makes President Bush a bad guy. McCain even voted for Bush 90% of the time and that makes him evil. Now the real question? How ofter did Husein Obama vote with Reed and Pelosi. Maybe I should say 9% Reed and Pelosi. Any bets that Husein Obama has a 100% voting record with them, that is when he didn't vote present. Now here comes Palin and there goes original thought Bidden and Husein Obama goes into a state of panic.
No, Thug, McCain WON'T be a
No, Thug, McCain WON'T be a Bush extension. Bush's approval rating is down, surely, but that does not make McCain his clone. Look at the stands AGAINST Bush's policies that McCain has taken. McCain also WILL veto earmarks. McCain will NOT have Rumsfeld as SecDef. McCain is a thoughtful, caring, energetic, and progressive Senator. He puts our COUNTRY ahead of party politics. I have NEVER had the sense that Obama cares for the good of our country above and beyond his own personal ambition. I also believe history will rate GW as a much better leader than do his critics and detractors now.
It appears to me, and has even been put forth by media pundits, that Obama's leftist, liberal principles are merely the 21st Century version of those of the left in the 60s. He has nothing new, really, to offer--except a drift farther toward socialism. The government already controls entirely too much of my life. My freedoms are already curtailed by the invasion of big government. We can't kill that monster off, but perhaps we can control it.
With Pelosi and Reed in charge, we're already in a world of hurt. The reality is that one person alone, McCain or Obama, cannot do what he may promise. But, we have to start somewhere, and I'm willing to have the patriot McCain lead the way.
Frankly, I think the media
Frankly, I think the media should be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail. But as usual, nobody really gives a rats what I think.
Nevertheless, I believe in statesmanship, which we seldom have seen in the last century, much less this. I do believe McCain has that quality. Certainly he has a selfishness, but when everything is said and done, this is a man who cares about and serves his country. His record reflects that. His wife has money. Big deal. She, too, has exhibited altruistic characteristics. Governor Palin has her detractors, and she is ambitious, but what on earth do you call Obama? I simply cannot believe he cares about this country to the point he'd lay down his life for US. As Don Imus said recently, he is am empty suit. Who do you want as first lady? Cindy McCain follows the footsteps of many strong first ladies, including the Democrat Eleanor Roosevelt. She cares. She thinks outside and beyond herself. So does her husband, from all I've seen and read.
Can you guess my choice for president? Sublety was never my strong suit.
I find it interesting and
I find it interesting and slightly humorous that MSNBC fired two of their anchors for being Partisan. Maybe non bias in the National Media is in our future? Nah! I might as well wish for the energy death of the universe.
And to come down off the proverbial fence, for myself, I intend to vote for the McCain ticket. My reasons for doing so are legion while my reasons for not voting for the Obama ticket are the same.
Let me drop a sheet anchor here, I don't consider myself to be either a Republican or Democrat. I vote for the candidate that best embodies [at that level] the uber social competence that I hold dear. I am seeing that in none and I repeat none of our candidates so I am forced to choose from the proverbial "lesser of two evils".
I've had enough of your
I've had enough of your proverbs. I suggest using "common" or "customary" or even "legendary." Not sure of your meaning of each instance of your overuse of the term, 'proverbial.'
I appreciate your attempts
I appreciate your attempts to provide me with a thesaurus but if you will note the usage of your word suggestions would not fit the proper syntax of the sentence structure.
Now in this case the term "the lesser of two evils" is considered an old adage or proverb, thus my usage of the word "proverbial". I'm not going to bother giving you the definition of "proverbial" since you obviously have access to a computer and can look it up yourself.
I have a few questions for you CRANK. If it hurts to whack yourself with a brick you'd stop doing it right? So if my posts are such an irritant to you why don't you simply stop reading them? And lastly why is that such a hard concept for you to grasp?
I'm delighted that MSNBC
I'm delighted that MSNBC (NBC) fired Matthews and Olberman. I've watched both, and Matthews, tho biased, is a pretty good interviewer. Olberman, on the other hand, is a raving mad attack dog. Several years ago I watched him unleash the most personally vicious and insulting attack on President Bush ever. I wouldn't have insulted my worst enemy with the language he used--and ON THE AIR! It was way beyond the common bounds of decency. He's so far over the edge he should be hauled away in a strait jacket.
I can only imagine that AP
I can only imagine that AP uses the terms with which he is comfortable and which in his eyes accurately express his meaning. Lay off. Try to get his meaning. Don't joust with windmills.
Absolutely off limits! The
Absolutely off limits! The kids aren't running, Mom is!
It's funny, really. It reeks of desperation on the part of the opposition.
When McCain announced his choice last week, my first thought was WHO? But my with mantra being "Google is your friend", I started looking at her record and acheivements as a Mayor and Governor. I must say, her resume' is pretty impressive. She is a perfect fit for the type of administration McCain proposes. She balanced the state budget, returned money to the taxpayers (at the expense of "big oil", I might add), fought corruption in state Gov't (some of it in her own party, by the way), turned down a multi-million earmark to build a bridge to nowhere, lowered taxes, and looked smoking hot while doing it.
She also 86'ed the Governors personal chef and sold the state jet on eBay.
With a record like that, there is no red meat for the opposition to chew on, so they have to go for the easy kill.
It really strikes me as funny that the very party that thinks handing out condoms in schools, fighting tooth and nail against abstinance education, denying parents the right to notification if their kids undergo abortions or travel across state lines are good ideas, would sic the attack dogs on a pregnant teen. Maybe if she had aborted the pregnancy instaed of accepting responsibility...
Yep, desperate actions by worried opponents. It's going to be an interesting couple of months. This race, and McCain's candidacy, just got a big kick in the keester!

I have a feeling that we are
I have a feeling that we are going to be hearing more and more about Gov Palin's past as the pundits begin to find that the attacks on her family are for the most part boomeranging on them. I believe that you are correct in that they're picking the obvious and easy targets right now. There are probably hordes of reporters filtering through every public record in Alaska as we speak. If she ever forgot to dot and I or cross a T it will be drug out and vetted for any impropriety. Basically as an unknown she is fresh meat and fair game. I just find the dragging of family members through the proverbial political muck to be just a little disgusting.
Now as for Biden, he is not fresh meat and well, that particular journalistic carcass has been picked over quite thoroughly. So in that respect McCain has made a pretty interesting move that has succeeded in countering much of the press punch that the Obama/Biden ticket would have, should have gained.
There are a number of interesting things going on here though. Leaving out the breakthrough in the race and gender barriers, we actually have Liberal media screaming about a dearth of family values and Conservative media saying an unplanned pregnancy is A OK. I wonder if I should go track down Chicken Little to tell him the sky is falling.
Someone once told me that the only way to tell for sure if a politician is lying is if their lips are moving. Now I know too many politicians personally and that is simply not true, but dang it the level of antics, double talk and crossed finger empty promising that is considered acceptable at our national level of politics is simply staggering.
And Diablo, you aren't kidding by halves when you say it's going to be interesting. It's my understanding that Gov Palin's teleprompter malfunctioned last night. I would never have know it it hadn't been reported. She handled that one with great aplomb. I wonder if she can keep it up for the next few months. She certainly comes across as a tough cookie.
Unless something drastic is introduced to the mix I have my candidate picked. That means I am stuck with his Vice no matter what I may or may not think of them. That little factoid won't stop me from debating their merits or lack thereof. Gov Palin is indeed an interesting cat. Leaving aside my disgust about the family attacks I am truly enjoying this. I mean this is the first time ever that I have watched both the Democratic and Republican National conventions with rapt attention. Usually they're like watching college football after a turkey dinner and they put me right to sleep. Guilliani had me rolling last night and I am looking forward to tonight.
I remember a thread we
I remember a thread we engaged in a few months ago where we both lamented our choices for this go-round. My, how things can change in just a short time.
After watching both conventions (or at least most of both conventions, I can't sit still long enough to watch it all) my choice is pretty clear as well. We still have 61 days to go until election day, and much can happen in that amount of time. I have laid in a large supply of popcorn and recalibrated my B.S. filter. Let the games begin!
I heard about the teleprompter screw-up as well. It evidently happened to Mayor Gulianai as well and had a lot to do with why he went overtime in his speech.
No matter who gets the nod in November, he is going to have a tough row to hoe. Change never comes easy, especially in Government. The infamous 535 are not going to go down without a fight and Executive Orders can only go so far.
Veni, Vidi, Velcro ---- I came, I saw, I stuck around......
I don't know Diablo, I think
I don't know Diablo, I think I am still lamenting my available choices. I guess that I'm settling for the one I believe to be the lesser of two evils. Now I freely admit that you can't make everyone happy in regards to anything let alone political candidates. Heck you can't get 5 randomly picked individuals to agree that they like ice cream let alone agree on a flavor. So I know I'm never ever going to find what I believe to be the perfect candidate for office. But given my general disgruntlement with the choices I've been given lately I wonder if I'm asking too much.
Basically I guess I'm asking too much when; I would like to see someone, heck anyone in the position to do something about it with a solid energy fix or at least have something resembling a road map to said fix. And it they come up with it I would like some foresight. For example I wish they'd thought about the ramifications of using our food supply as a fuel source, boy that didn't have any backlash. I want someone who will enforce the rules already in place before they start adding new ones. Someone who will keep America strong but won't get us into another world war and I don't want someone who will kiss the rest of the worlds collective rears. There's more in fact a lot more but I'm way over my three wish limit.
I am however very disappointed that the immigration issue seems to have been removed from the National political table Sigh!
Amor, there are times when I
Amor, there are times when I read your posts and think, "how did this guy get inside my head?". Don't misinterpret, I think it's a good thing. It validates many of my beliefs and reinforces the fact that I might just have a decent idea or two about how things should be. On the other hand, it makes you a very tough act to follow because I often have little to add to your comments without being redundant.
We have had quite a few great leaders throughout history. Conversely, we've had our share of stinkers as well. I think what we really need is someone with a little bit of the best qualities of those great ones. A Franken-candidate of sorts. (No, not Al Franken either!)
I have devoted a lot of bandwidth on this and other sites proclaiming my love of this country. Like my children, I want the absolute best for it. Unfortunately, sometimes the absolute best is beyond our reach and we have to grind some lemons into lemonade. I think that's what I am doing this time around, making lemonade.
Somewhere along the line this country became deeply divided. Far right verses far left. Battle lines have been drawn and there is precious little middle ground. This is saddening to me, because if it's allowed to continue, I see it as the ruination of this Great Land.
Somewhere, somehow, there needs to be a way to bring the best ideas of both sides together. A true leader has the ability to do just that; take the best of all ideas and meld them into one ideal that moves us in a direction that benefits all of us, not just one half of us. We have traded the art of compromise for the easy idea of simply pandering to a particular voting bloc in order keep a particular stuffed suit in office.
The ramifications of this way of governing are clearly evident. Our borders are as porous as a seive. Welfare cheats abound. Millions upon millions (or is it billions upon billions?) of financial aide going to countries that hate us and all we stand for. Equal amounts of our money go to subsidising foolhardy band-aid fixes such as ethanol. All the while good, honest, people struggle to put food on the table and pay their mortgages, put their kids through school, and carve out a small piece of "The American Dream".
And the saddest part of all this are the 535 Neros inside the beltway playing their fiddles looking at nothing but their next election cycle and doing not what is best for our country, but what is going to get them re-elected.
I wish for a candidate that is above that. Someone with the foresight and vision to do what is best for us, the U.S.. If I could build one I certainly would. But as my Sainted Grandmother used to say "Wish in one hand and crap in the other, see which one you get first".
So yeah, I'm settling this time around. Not because I want to, but because I have to. I readily admit that I have goals that are way beyond my reach, but they are my goals none the less. Will I (or we) ever reach them? Probably not, but that isn't going to deter me from trying. I guess that's what hope and faith are all about: wanting what is just out of reach and always trying to acheive it.
Veni, Vidi, Velcro ---- I came, I saw, I stuck around......
Well said Diablo, and well
Well said Diablo, and well heck all I can say is "ditto".
I am actually looking forward to the debates. And apparently the silliness will never end, I hear the Natl inquirer is going to come out with a story that Palin had an affair and on the other side did the Dem's really trash a bunch of flags? Sigh! I wish both sides would stick to the issues at hand, since we have enough of those and don't need to create more.
I probably should have done
I probably should have done this as a blog so I could continue to make a running commentary but oh well. Does anyone have any comment on the way some of the media is portraying Gov Palins 17 yr old pregnant daughter?
I say off limits. If she and or her child were going to be any type of burden on the tax payers then yes we should be able to take a swing at the problem. But I don't see that as being the case here. Both children are going to be well loved and well taken care of. I am continually espousing the need for parents to take responsibility for their children and their actions. I don't see Gov Palin foisting that off on someone else. Nor do I see her daughters pregnancy as some form of bad decision making on Gov Palin's part, it was a bad decision on her daughters part, and Gov Palin is dealing with it. And again, that's all I've been asking of parents here, accept responsibility put your big boy pants on and deal with it. Pregnancy is not something that is done by halves. While it is obviously preventable, once it happens it is not correctable short of birth without employing drastic measures. So short of drastic measures, it simply must be dealt with.
This being said I want to mention something about Gov Palin that has impressed me with this whole thing. While I happen to disagree with her pro-life platform she certainly is walking the walk in her expression of pleasure over her daughter and her fiance at keeping the baby.
