Letter to the LIVE Staff

By Amor Patriae - Posted on August 19th, 2008

Dear LIVE Staff,

I wish to thank you for your recent publication. I happened to be fortunate enough to receive a copy directly from Bill before mine arrived in the mail. I am by no means a sycophant yet I am an admitted ardent admirer of the medium which has been chosen by LIVE with it’s ability for interaction.

All too many journalists are insulated by both the armor of their own rectitude and self perceived verisimilitude. And pardon me for slipping into the local vernacular but it takes some serious cajones to do what your journalists do. There are many many nationally renowned journalists whom I believe would promptly enter into a state of unconsciousness [faint] at the mere thought of having [we] the uneducated and uninformed masses respond in a direct and or critical way to any of their compositions. I mean how many really good journalists do any of you know who can [with aplomb] take a phone call at 9pm to hear how they misspelled a word. I personally know of one and he has my undying and heartfelt respect for having that quality amongst others.

And please trust me when I say that my encomium of your journalists should in no way take away from what the rest of the staff is doing. So I must admit that for the first time LIVE has managed [by keeping my attention] to compel me to actually read the hard print [versus skimming through it] without waiting for it to arrive on the NET. Before now this was due to the breakup of the stories and ad placement that was just plain frustrating and entirely distracting. In addition, somehow the staff managed to have not one or two but every story either hit home or seriously pique my interest, and no other periodical that I read regularly has ever managed that. And considering how voracious my reading is that’s saying something.

That being said I find myself in the entirely enjoyable but vexing position of waiting on and for the postings of the articles so that I may say my piece, possibly arousing some from their peace.

In closing I wish to say that I spend my days literally mired in mental muck, and my ability to enter into unencumbered discourse with some of the greater mentalities of our community is an enormous stress reliever for me. And I have LIVE to thank for that.

Warmest Regards
One who loves his country

I found the letter

I found the letter delightful and concur with its sentiments. As for all the comments--well, the letter wasn't submitted to someone for critiquing and editing. Fine as is. Enjoy it for that. Good job, AP!

You guys should spend more

You guys should spend more time on the content of the issues. All this other stuff is just push n shove over a choice of words. I have never used a Webster's much till I started trying to understand all this intellectual sword fighting.

I too enjoy Del Rio LIVE!

I too enjoy Del Rio LIVE! My post was commenting on your vocabulary, I am glad that there is someone that reports on the facts of every news worthy topic in Del Rio, unlike the DRNH. Again, I thank and more importantly enjoy the articles written in DRL. hats off to their staff. But again I believe you meant "for you to decipher" not "for you two deciper" which really shows what your level is. In the words of a great commentator Paul Harvey,

GOOD DAY!

Nope, sorry when I said "you

Nope, sorry when I said "you two" I meant you two since I was responding to two different people in that post. Or did you not read fully though it? Also when you quote me I would appreciate it if you would refrain from doing so incorrectly.
Have a nice day.

Amor thank you for the wonderful compliments. Some are just jealous that they don't have as wide of a vocabulary as you do.  Amor I like reading your posts, so please keep on posting.

Bill, You did a GREAT JOB! -

This is one of the better

This is one of the better ones I've read, I do look forward to receiving it.
Nice piece on Comstock School too, as a parent of a "white flighter" it was nice to see the writeup.
I would have enjoyed a bit more focus on some of the technology, for such a small school the are still pretty high on the cutting edge.
Mac Books in classrooms, smart boards going up soon...these kids are getting first class educations.

Amor, Amor. I do not know

Amor, Amor. I do not know who you are but after reading your post, I do know you are FULL OF IT. In reading your past postings, and comparing to this one it is obvious that you spend a lot of time doing nothing. Although you may believe that your post may give others the perception that you are an intellect of great speech and literature, it just shows that you think too much of yourself.....Yes I do believe that you spent too much time with a thesaurus and you probably do not even know the definitions of the words you used.....Just telling it like it is. Isn't this why you love this site. Get a life.

I've found, during my

I've found, during my perusing of internet forums, that people who are well-spoken are usually disliked by the uneducated. Just because someone uses words not commonly heard in everyday speech doesn't mean they spent hours with a thesaurus trying to confuse others. Believe it or not, some people just know those words and their meanings. There are far better things to get angry about, if that's what you want to do, than someone using words with more than three syllables. You tell Amor to "get a life," but you're the one talking trash on the internet.

Great googly moogly. Well

Great googly moogly. Well this isn't the response I thought I'd get but hey, such is life. Ok, DR watchdog I will address your response first. I simply wished to compliment and congratulate some dear friends for some wonderful work since I have an inkling, albeit small of the blood sweat and tears that went into this edition. Also I do have a life. In fact I average 12+ days of work. It takes me less that 10mins to hammer out most of my posts. If it takes you 6+ hours to type out a post thereby making you think others are wasting their lives away that's a perceptual problem on your part and neither mine nor anyone elses problem other than yours.

In addition, you seem to be upset and I can only assume that it's because I must have used something larger than a one syllable word thereby forcing you to look it up. That's a personal problem with your education and not mine. Basically any paper cuts from said Thesaurus's or carpal tunnel from looking words up on the internet are for you to deal with so quit whining. To your comment that I am "FULL OF IT". I simply state that which I feel. I usually tone down my use of the vernacular so that I don't get the responses that I got from you but this message wasn't for you although it was simply posted publicly so sorry if you believed that I intended you two to deciper it. Those whom it was intended for [who happen to be learned journalists] know me and know the actual intelligence level I may or may not have. But don't worry the next time I have something nice to say to the LIVE Staff I will just email it to them directly thusly avoiding offending your finely honed sensibilities since I can't have your learning a new word or two on my conscience. Is that good enough for you?

Now that being said if like mine your intelligence level equates to your posting I have some advice. Most people stopped eating glue in 1st grade and it's time you stopped as it's causing obvious damage.

As for justathought, it's possible that you have the same problem and maybe the two of you can get together and play scrabble to learn a few new words just stay away from the glue.

P.S. that means post script for the both of you, [ to save you the trouble of looking it up] it would be nice if you would stop trying to drag down the intelligence of our community with your complaints and educate yourself and other to rise above the general malaise of mediocrity.
And since I'm so nice here you go;
mediocrity (n.) The state or quality of being mediocre.
mediocrity (n.) Mediocre ability, achievement, or performance.
mediocrity (n.) One that displays mediocre qualities
mediocre (adj.) Moderate to inferior in quality; ordinary

Wow- it still amazes me how

Wow- it still amazes me how easily some people confuse vocabulary with intelligence.

What amazes me even more is

What amazes me even more is how some people see vocabulary and intelligence as mutually exclusive, and take the cheap shots in complete anonymity.  Thanks for the warm compliments, Patriae.  We know we have a readership for what we strive to do, and make no apologies for it.

Why, Mr. Sontag, you need

Why, Mr. Sontag, you need not characterize one's post as a cheap shot for a mere opinion. "Justathought" was expressing his/her opinion. Getting defensive again there!

I personally enjoyed the thread by Amor, thought t'was well composed and thought out; I guess I would say he was appreciative of this Live magazine issue.
