Amistad Boaters, please be aware...
There is a reason why there are buoys that mark off the area known as Scuba Cove, located by the cliffs by Diablo East. Although more typically used by regular swimmers, one of the reasons it was marked off is because scuba divers go there without needing to trail a dive flag. Now that the Del Rio Dive Club has actively been using that area, on more than one occasion we've surfaced to find a boat nearly upon us. We use dive flags anytime we dive outside of the cove, so please respect the markers and find other safe places to fish. Besides, we can tell you from experience there simply aren't many fish there worth throwing a hook for --- really there aren't.
We are well into our progress of re-establishing training areas in that cove for new divers and experienced divers alike to hone their skills. We've even marked the two sunken boats there. We're working on acquiring large hoola-hoops to suspend for buoyancy navigation practice and having a large platform built to keep divers off the silty bottom during skills practices.
This is also typically the first place we take visiting divers, which is happening with greater frequency now that the club website is active and connected to other major scuba websites. A number of other dive shops bring large classes of students here as well for training. It is our endeavor to raise the popularity and awareness of Amistad as a great place to scuba dive, just as it is well known as a great place to fish.
So, please spread the word that Scuba Cove is being used for its named purpose, almost every weekend and many times during the week, particularly at night (yes, we do like to night dive). Thanks a million!

Are you sure we're talking
Are you sure we're talking about the same place? I've been here since 1983 (minus a few years I was stuck at the Pentagon and San Antonio) and I don't recall ever seeing a large buoy. There are three buoys marking the cove, all moored together with steel cable attached at both points of the cove. Also, I believe the Park Service maintains the channel buoys, not the IBWC. At least, that's what I gathered when I was talking with one of the Park Service guys about our markers for the sunken boats.

Maybe I'm mistaken on the timeline, perhaps it was 2 years ago that the bouy went on walkabout. But there a definatly was a larger bouy at the cove. It was about 8 or so feet in diameter and smack in the middle.
Now, I freely admit to brutally murdering a few brain cells back in the 70's but I have never had one of those "flashbacks" that they promised I would have. (yes, I did inhale, that was the point)
My wife has just assured me that there was indeed a bouy there (whew!), and it was 2 years ago that it went on it's journey.

The big buoys marking the Rio Grande channel are, indeed, the sole responsibility of the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), and they are a monstrous job to deal with. Just getting them out of the water for overhaul is ponderous. Regrettably they have not, historically, been well-maintained.

As long as they are still
As long as they are still floating, they could be spruced up right where they are simply by tying up to them and doing the work. Provided of course that the wind is down and the waves aren't too bad.
I would gladly donate my time and boat if the IBWC would spring for some Flourescent Orange tape and new reflective numbers. I'm out there anyway, and I'd be glad to do the work. I figure I could spiff up 2 or 3 of them a day. I'll even sign a waiver absolving them of any liability regarding my boat or person.

What markers for sunken boats? Is there something I/we should be aware of so that we don't run over them? I also only remember multiple buoy's connected by cable. Maybe Diablo is thinking of the Large Buoy outside of the AFB marina. It was gone the last time I put out there.

That particular bouy (by the AF Marina) was listing badly back around the beginning of the year, then it went belly-up.

Ah, thanks I was hoping I wasn't going crazy. Ive assassinated a few brain cells myself in the past including listing to either port or starboard and going belly-up like that buoy :)
What ever happened to the
What ever happened to the big bouy that was there?
I know that one of the big wind storms last spring blew it on to an island, but it disappeared shortly afterward.
You might want to have the dive club contact the IBWC about having it replaced. Those of us that know about it, stay clear. I also tell other boaters about it if I see them close to the cove.
The 2 small bouys that are still there are not nearly enough, considering the circumstances.
All the lighted bouys on the lake(except two that were recently replaced)are in sad shape and need work.
The IBWC is supposedly responsible for maintaining them, I wish they would get on the ball. I've complained about them, but to no avail.
