Where can I buy hobby supplies locally?
By Computer Speakers - Posted on July 6th, 2008
I have a few hobbies, and it seems I can't get anything to support them in Del Rio. Can anyone tell me where I can find supplies locally for:
Framing/matting?
R/C airplanes?
Casting/molding?
Stained-glass making?
I really don't want to have to trust shopping on the internet, and with gas prices I can't exactly go into San Antonio every time I need a few supplies. Is there anywhere at all in this place to go to buy supplies to feed my hobbies, or am I SOL?
And folks, please don't give me the answer I have (no kidding) actually heard too many times: "You need to find some new hobbies." That's counterproductive, but seems to be everyone's answer so far, LOL.
Thanks in advance!

Nah, stick with what you
Nah, stick with what you love. Don't find new hobbies. I have my hobbies but they do seem to have gotten way too expensive over the years. [I love cars "Cough"]. I need to go back to building models. That was a way way cheaper hobby. In fact upon further consideration I think the argument with my wife of "where will I put all the danged models" will be a lot less painful than the one I had about wanting a super charger and a flame job from a Floridian artist.
Like Crunk Panda I consider the internet local and in fact my wife and I don't even shop in SA much anymore. We just order what we need and have it delivered in a day or so right to our office. Heck I have to do it for almost all my clothing because we don't have a big and tall store. Although judging from what I see in my own mirror and the people that I see around town, a big and tall store would do quite well here :)
On trusting the internet, well honestly my wife has made an art of buying and selling crud on the internet. Heck after failing to find something local we just bought my daughter a pair of shoes from the Pay Less website for a wedding. Just try to use a reputable seller and use a credit card. There is a federal law "which the credit card companies don't like to advert" that protects you from charging a good or service and not receiving it.
Oh BTW, I jealous, I've been considering doing framing and matting for years and haven't gotten off of my rear to pursue it.
I consider the internet
I consider the internet local
Horse pucky! Internet is
Horse pucky! Internet is not local, anymore than "customer service" from someone in Pakistan is.
This guy likes to see, feel, maybe even try on for size the stuff he's considering, the same way I do clothes. No point in buying a sweater on the Internet. It will almost certainly NOT meet my admittedly picky standards of fit.
Framing and matting and all kinds of arcane stained glass supplies can be obtained through Dick Blick, Galesburg, Ill., but there is NO substitute for seeing the colors in person under different lighting, feeling the texture of the mats. DB gives long lists of order items I have no idea what they'd look like -- marigold opal or radium black iridescent stained glass, for example. What?
DB's been around forever. I've gotten their catalogs off and on for 40 years, and the inventory changes every year, so ordering online is a crapshoot, but their business thrives on it.
The good news, Speakers, is that DB also carries a good inventory of casting.molding supplies. If you're already hooked up with them, great. If not, take some time to cruise through their huge Web site, www.dickblick.com.
