Henderson, Texas cowboy Shawn Moore took a hard fall during this ride at the Rotary Rodeo in 2007.  Moore sustained possible hip and leg injuries before he was carried on a stretcher to an EMS ambulance that transported him to Val Verde Regional Medical Center.  (LIVE! photo/Bill Sontag) (click image to enlarge)
The Wild ,Wild, West  Independence Day Rodeo rolls into Del Rio Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5, for  two days of exciting rodeo action. Sponsored by the Del Rio Rotary Club and produced by the Lester Meier Rodeo Company, the annual rodeo promises top flight rodeo action in bareback bronc riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing and the ever popular bull riding and outstanding bull fighters.

But, as the commercial says, “And, that’s not all!”  Other special events include an old fashioned scoop race, calf scramble, mutton busting, and for the smallest of the rodeo contestants, a crowd pleasing stick horse race.

The wholesome, family-oriented rodeo will also feature the popular professional rodeo comedian Slim Garner. As a special added attraction Slim will demonstrate his special “Cowboy Cadillac.”

“Cisco Kid” is one trick pony who, with handler “Scooter,” thrilled the crowd in the 2007 edition of the Independence Day Rodeo.  Both from Houston, the little horse and trainer performed several stunts and demonstrations of unusual skills, delighting children and adults, alike.  (LIVE! photo/Bill Sontag) (click image to enlarge)
The Lester Meier Rodeo Company and the Rotary Club of Del Rio joined forces three years ago because rodeo fans of all ages, from five to 95, can attend and enjoy rodeo action and wholesome entertainment as well as help raise money for Rotary Scholarships that benefit the youth of Del Rio.

This weekend is known as “Cowboy Christmas,” because so many rodeos are held across the United States to celebrate our nation’s history and increased opportunities for cowboys to enter multiple rodeos and win money. Rodeo is America’s original sport and there can be no better way to celebrate that with this All-American patriotic event.

Save your gas money, stay in Del Rio and enjoy the rodeo with family and friends. Title sponsor for the rodeo is Ram Country Dodge with co-sponsors U.S. Border Patrol and T.J. Moore Lumber Company Gates open Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at Del Rio Feed, Sam’s Boot Corral, T. J. Moore Lumber Company, Border Federal Credit Union and Ramada Del Ro. Join LIVE! Friday and Saturday night for updated rodeo standings after each performance.

Thumbs Up to the Rotary Club

Thumbs Up to the Rotary Club of Del Rio and course all the sponsors. Del Rio is a Great little town on the border that is made better by local businesses and clubs doing their part everyday on both sides of the border.

I'm sure Jeff Scott is a mover and shaker...I go a long way back with him and Matt too.... Happy 4th of July

Got my tickets and can't

Got my tickets and can't wait. I grew up riding horses and working cattle and I know what one of those PO'ed Bulls or getting launched from a horse can do to you. People now days think that bungee jumping or other extreme sports are a death defying thrill. I say try being a rodeo clown for one day. Now those guys are out and out crazy and damned good at what they do.

There are POSITIVE things in

There are POSITIVE things in Del Rio! Thanks to the Rotary club and the local businesses who help sponsor the rodeo. Our family is planning on going again. It's nice to see that local events can be organized and supported in sleepy hollow Del Rio! Besides, not being able to afford driving as much anymore, its nice to have some entertainment right here. San Antonio is too far away now thanks to the ever increasing cost of gas now.

Last year was the first rodeo my family and I ever attended and I had a blast. I have a deep respect for the crazy people who like to race around on horses, rope calfs, attempt to get close to a bull, and all the other crazy antics. NOT me!! We'll keep a safe distance in the stands. Hope to see local favorite Jeff Scott out there?

Thanks Rotarians!
