Here's how to tell that it's too danged hot.

By Amor Patriae - Posted on June 20th, 2008

Is it just me or does anyone else wish they lived right where the take the temp's here? I mean every time I see the temp on the news it's always cooler than it is at my house. It was 108 here yesterday and right now it's 104 in the shade.

I finally got Time Warner [no love lost there by the way]to come out and fix my cable/internet and what did they find? They told me that it is sooo hot that the Cable heated up and stretched [I call it melting]to the point where the copper line in it broke in numerous places from the stress. What The!!

Oh and my niece didn't believe her Grandmother when she told her that you can really fry an egg on the sidewalk. It took over an hour, but she believes her now and the dogs considered it Haute Cuisine that evening when it cooled off.

I guess I should be happy that I'm not in Laredo, it's real hot down there.

It's too hot and I'm Prayin for some Rain.

Crunk, the problem started

Crunk, the problem started with my not having internet during the heat of the day and having it mornings and evenings then progressed to not having it at all. Also the cable was stretched pretty tight from the pole to the corner of my house to keep the Cement trucks from ripping it down when they put my pool in a while back. Hope this helps.

That is exactly what is

That is exactly what is happening.
I have a weather station by the computer and usually when it hits about 85 degrees in the morning, so between 9-10 am it cuts out. Stays out until about 11 at night.
What number did you end up calling to get them to actually help?
I called the road runner people the other day and they kept blaming me and my stuff.
There are only so many ways to explain to some tech person that you have to get a signal to your modem before it can be a problem.

I called the local number

I called the local number which leads to a non-local help desk as I'm sure you are painfully aware. I went through the troubleshooting thing with them over the phone and pressured them to send someone out. They did [of course it was a week later and he was an hour and a half late off the appointed time frame, but that's typical around here I've found]. The guy that came out replaced some connection but mentioned that he had experienced problems with the cables from pole to house, and that if we continued to have probs to call back and he would replace the cable. Sure enough the next day when it got hot [about 11am] no internet. He came back replaced the entire cable and now my internet is screaming. It's funny but I talked to another person today who is having this same problem, this heat is getting to everyone.

Oh, when I say I pressured them to send someone out, I mean that I sicked my wife on em. She's just a little computer savvy and I think they may have sent someone sheerly out of a sense of self preservation in hopes that she wouldn't call back :)

I thought about it some more

I thought about it some more and went back out, there is my main line coming up from the ground into a female coax coupler which then went from the coupler to the main splitter.
I looked at the couple and it was filthy and had a greasy type material on it. I cleaned it and ran a new line from the coupler to the splitter...everything started working like magic.
I did a lot better job running it too than the past owners had done, so hopefully this will prevent it from happening again.
It actually helped throughout the house, every channel is clearer now too.
It helps to be smart on certain things sometimes.

Glad you got it fixed.

Glad you got it fixed. Figures I finally get mine fixed and there's zip going on around here. Oh well.

A little more bitchin about the heat on my part; my two resident Scorpion eating Tarantulas are dead. I found them all curled up where they fell off their normal evening wall perches. I'm no Arachnologist but they both seemed healthy and certainly well fed. So since I don't put out poison of any type and it just rained, I am assuming that the heat got to them. My danged Chickens were all turned into Bobcat digestive byproduct so my house cats are now my last line of defense against those stinking Scorpions.

I ended up having to call

I ended up having to call them out anyway. It finally gave up the ghost. From the box to the house...yeah, the cable went to hell.
The tech was great, ran new cable after his quick initial troubleshoot. New cable, new connections, new splitter, and it's working great.
It was just a pain getting Road Runner support to listen to me that I needed an actual tech to come out to the house and that it wasn't my modem or computer.
The only thing is my lines are below ground so they are going to have to come back later and bury the line.

One of my employee's just

One of my employee's just had this same problem today. First, Roadrunner kept saying that their intermittent contact during online trouble shooting was not a problem. Second, the first guy came out and jiggled the cable a few times said "look it works" charged her $35 and left. Third, this last guy that came out and at her vehement insistence, reluctantly replaced the entire cable and charged her again, but what do you know!! She has internet again for the first time in three weeks. Just gotta love being a Monopoly.

The tech that worked on my prob was great. It turned out he was a contractor. "The contractor". We did spend a few minutes discussing the problems that are to be had around here concerning the hiring of reliable people. It was only slightly refreshing to hear that he was having the same problem that I was in that matter.

Why did they charge? It's

Why did they charge? It's their line, they are responsible for it.
My guy was great, didn't talk much but did a great job.

I think the guy said they

I think the guy said they were charging because he had to make another trip. However my employee called and raised holy heck and I don't think she is going to get charged at all and is going to get credited with her loss of connectivity as well. Yeah :) !!

I have been having problems

I have been having problems with Time Warner during the heat too...I wonder if this is the same thing.
I should call them.
