Pizza Hut hands base business to competition on silver platter

By Computer Speakers - Posted on June 9th, 2008

Good evening good people of Del Rio. I have a question of sorts, but it could be a statement just as easily.

Tonight I spoke with an assistant manager at the Del Rio Pizza Hut to find out why they refuse to deliver to the base.

The man I spoke with, David Duncan, very politely informed me that the drivers could not reach the customers in time. Between the drive out to the base and necessary security inspections, he claimed it sometimes takes an hour or more to deliver a pizza.

But, somehow Dominoes manages to deliver to us just fine. Granted, they don't bring it to our door; we have to go to the gate and pick it up. But that's fine, and beats the long drive downtown. They tack on a delivery charge and I tip generously, chalking it up as a taxation on my laziness.

Why can't Pizza Hut support us this way? Surely Dominoes is making enough off us to justify continued delivery support to the base.

I wrote to the Pizza Hut corporate offices to see if I can get an answer, but does anyone here have any insight?

Oh, and they do deliver to Gateway Apartments.

Okay, don't laugh, but I

Okay, don't laugh, but I actually worked for both Pizza Hut and Dominos. Now, from experience as a driver at both places, I agree with their decision. Dominos chose to deliver to the base 1. because Pizza Hut doesn't. 2. Because they tip good. But, it's true that it can take about 30 min to an hour jsut for one delivery to the base. Its a hassel for the driver definitely because we have to get checked every time we come out there and then we have to find the house or building. Dominos does deliver to your door but sometimes we had to ask you to meet us at the gate, or every time depending on where your building was. You may have thought that the driver got it there on time, but thats because if we got stuck taking a delivery to the base, thats all we did. If you took one, you took them all. Because by the time we got back the next one was ready and it was for the base again. We didn't have time to take anything else, and although they tip good, it barely covered the gas we used going out there all night. Now at Pizza Hut, they divided it up. We don't deliver to the base, but we will deliver past fishermen's HQ, which Dominos does NOT. If we went to the lake we would wait for the customer at FHQ. Pizza Hut will actually deliver to the houses out towards the lake, which is why it take to long to also deliver to the base. PH does not have as many drivers on at a time like dominos does because they also have a dine in area. Dominos doesn't so they can afford to have more drivers working at one time. Which they usually do, because they get delivery out to the base. It actually takes me less time to deliver out to the lake than it does to deliver to the base. You may not think so but its true. And I'll admit I speed but it still takes to long to add base deliveries to PH too. I think Dominos can handle it.

No laughing here; that’s

No laughing here; that’s an honest buck. But… Pizza Hut told me they won’t meet anyone anywhere for a pick up. That, and they do deliver to Gateway Apartments, which is all of 30 seconds from Laughlin. Anyway, it doesn’t matter, because when I called recently to take the manager up on his offer to meet me at the gate, I was refused. Oh well.

Hey everyone, just an

Hey everyone, just an update. After writing Pizza Hut's corporate offices, the local manager here contacted me very quickly and we got the issue resolved. He explained why the business handles things the way they do, what they're doing to try and provide more options, and even offered a "meet-in-the-middle" type fix.

He has offered to do something similar to what Dominoes does and meet us outside the gate, which is probably the best we could ask for in today's high-security-threat world.

Thanks Pizza Hut for listening!

And many merchants in town,

And many merchants in town, such as Comet Cleaners, Jitra Thai and Dick Owens Liquors are probably very glad that cheapo strip development has not popped up in competition. By the way, I was in the Army, and recall seeing a lot more pawn shops in the gateway communities than I've ever seen near an Air Force base. How 'bout you?

It has something to do with

It has something to do with the particular Franchise owner that we have here. This individual owns several Pizza Huts out in this part of Texas. I had a hard time getting them to deliver out in the Los Campos area. I had to take a map in and point out that I was much much closer than other areas that they delivered to in Del Rio. I told them that I didn't mind an extra fee for delivery "or as you put it a tax on laziness :)" Anyway they finally agreed to do the deliveries.

This particular Franchise owner must be an interesting cat because he has certainly done some things to harm his own business and seemingly doesn't care. The constricted deliveries is not the only thing. Have you guy's noticed that there are no phone numbers in the yellow or white pages for the store? Also there are no phone numbers on their coupons. Coupons only come from the Pizza hut store and there is no advertisement. And when you do call info to get a number for the local Pizza Hut all you get is the number to the out of town [phone an order in line]. Which by the way I have complained about numerous times. Have any of you wondered where all the Middle School dropouts get jobs? The Pizza Hut [phone in line] has my vote as the likely culprit because you can have them read an order back to you and they still send it in wrong.

Oh and for those of you at the Base, this may not help you on this particular tour but you can bet that as soon as the loop goes in there will be some food joint's moving out your way. Several business owners and I'd bet that a few franchise's are currently in a holding pattern awaiting some signal on which way to jump.

They used to years ago,

They used to years ago, after Sept 11th it pretty much stop as the security at the gate increased.
I think they started back up delivering at some point, not sure. I remember even after Sept 11th they agreed to meet people at the gate, I wonder if they would make the same deal these days.
It still befuddles me that there isn't anything closer to the base food wise, Sonic and McDonald's cropped up but even still that isn't exactly prime realty.

Besides there being less traffic near the base compared to intown...doesn't the city scare developers away from near the base because of what ya'll call, "encroachment".

Last I checked there are

Last I checked there are houses, apartments, a tattoo shop, a restaurant that can't seem to stay open more than six months at a time, and a dollar store within relative walking distance of the main gate. There are plenty of for sale signs up in the general area as well.
So developing in already developed area is hardly encroachment.
it is a rarity at many bases, stateside and overseas...to not have things sitting right outside the gate.
At the base there are plenty of young Airmen, both enlisted and officer who don't have their own transportation. Imagine the potential if someone tapped that market. There are plenty of military families and single airmen on base who have little option after around 7 PM other than a Bowling Center, Officers Club and Shoppette (gas station).

Honestly this is the only

Honestly this is the only State side Military base that I have ever been to that didn't have some type of an Oriental food restaurant a dry cleaners and a pawn shop within a mile or less of one or more of it's gates.
