A place for children to play

By Flame - Posted on June 7th, 2008

I know this is a small town. I've been herer for 15 years. One thing that I have noticed is that there is no place for small children to go and have fun, or our younger youth a place to hang out.

The only place right now is The Spot. Ever since Joe and Jenny sold the place, it has been booming and doing quite well, and being under new management, people enjoy going. Joe and Jenny were crabs, and were hated by many of the patrons that came to their facility. But again, there is no other place. The playgrounds around town are NEVER kept up and the equipment is so old you'd need a tetnus shot just by looking at it. The city does not maintain them or put money towards improvements or creating a REAL park.

There are constant food chains opening up in this area. I think that they should build a chucky Cheese or a Peter Piper Pizza franchise for the smaller children. As far as the teenagers are concerned, they seriously need a 'club' made for them to hang out, gossip, engage in internet capabilites. And include refreshments that they can enjoy. Set up video game centers, like XBOX live and let them compete against other people around the world. Heck...even bring a Dave and Busters here. Their only choice is either a joke of a building they call a mall, or skating every sidewalk, business areas, and streets that they can find.

Another cool idea would be put-put golf with go-carts or even a paintball field. Instead of outlet malls, put that money towards the kids. Many travel out of town to enjoy these luxarys because Del Rio just doesn't cut it. Bring a big name company in for the kids here. Maybe they'll stay out of trouble and heck....who knows....maybe the teen pregnancy rate will drop too. Just about every 14 year old in this town is pregnant.

This town needs a boost to attract more people. There's only 3 reasons why people live in Del Rio. One, they are military. Two, they are winter birds. And finally three...they were unfortunate to be born here.

Come on people.... instead of building more apartments and housing area by local buisness owners, they should invest in something that would be of interest.

Del Rio is a great place to

Del Rio is a great place to live for certain people, but not everyone. I know a great many people who love the small-town atmosphere and slow pace of life, but it's not for me, and the one thing I hate is hearing "it is what you make it." It is what it is, and what it is isn't my cup of tea. No harm there, but don't get angry at people who don't like this place. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I'm sorry, but I'm not really willing to change my way of life and hobbies because I live in a town that doesn't support them. It's not the people, for the most part. It's just the lack of venues/places to buy supplies that I find so frustrating. I will continue to suggest changes and improvements as long as I can, and although they seem to fall on deaf ears most of the time, I won't be the guy who sits back and complains without trying to get out and do something about it. But, until someone opens a store that sells all the things I need to stay entertained, my money will go to a different city, and that only hurts to long-term residents of Del Rio.

I know this thread was about kids, but they're not the only ones with a lack of things to do.

Speakers, you are dead on

Speakers, you are dead on correct in your comments.  If by your pseudonym, we can infer that high tech stuff is your gig, you're right again.  We are computer-impoverished here, and I'm guessing folks have to resort (as have I) to shopping online.

Clothes are a nettlesome issue for me.  We need a big and tall men's store.  Because of my height, all I can buy here is a pair of shoes, and the selections are few.  I believe firmly in "Shop Del Rio," but for decent, comfortable clothes I have to capitalize on trips to San Antonio to Josephs or Casual Male.

In any case, I'd like to hear more of your suggestions and your hobbies.

Bill, I'm into a lot of

Bill, I'm into a lot of artsy stuff, like stained-glass, framing and the like, but I really love models (of the radio-control variety; not Paris Hilton) too. The internet is a wonderful place to find the models, but I want to touch them, feel the quality of the parts, maybe even test them out first. Plus, when you need spare parts you have to either spend a ton of cash to buy them all when you make it to a hobby shop or wait a week or more while they come in the mail. And that's a lot of down time when you really want to be flying!

Anyhow, I also enjoy hunting and fishing, so while I live in a great area for it, my other gripe still stands, and that is availability of equipment. Wal-Mart is fine for fishing gear in most cases, but they're so seasonal, and I'd really like more than two aisles to choose from. I've recently taken an interest in bowhunting, which might have been a bad idea while living in Del Rio because Wal-Mart has no hunting gear now and True Value, according to a gentleman who works at the gun counter there, refuses to carry archery supplies. Hunting season may come to a close each year, but practice season doesn't... I called Academy's corporate offices, but they said they have no plans to build out here. They're missing out on a gold mine, but that's their bad... So, it's not that I have weird interests, but I do find it odd that an area with such a huge hunting and fishing population doesn't have a better specialty store for equipment.

I started a new thread on the subject as to not hijack this one completely. Oh, and yes, I do enjoy the high tech world too, as best I can.

Dear Computer Speakers, I'm

Dear Computer Speakers,

I'm so very sorry you are having a difficlut time locating the products you need. We have tried on two different occasions to stock a variety of archery equipment, but found that it just doesn't have a good turn-over. We don't have a lot of space, so we have to analyze our sales and stock the items that do well. I am sorry if Gene gave you a bad impression of our store, he really isn't refusing to stock archery,it is just that we have told him not to. We again are having to concentrate on merchandise that has a better turn time. I do wish we had the room and knowledge to stock all items that our wonderful and faithful customers request. We do the best we know how, and sometimes it just isn't enough. I do really appreciate you giving us a chance. If there a certain items that you need, ask Gene if he can special order them for you.

Thanks for your time,

ROFLMAO!!

Hey Bill, has anyone done a business story on Russell Hardware?

Yes, Patrie, I did.

Yes, Patrie, I did.  Almost two years ago at Christmas.  And that was for only one of their great departments.  See http://www.swtexaslive.com/december2006/russell   And Hyde did one in the sporting goods department, http://www.swtexaslive.com/april2007/catch-amistad-fish

Is it time for some updates, a different department?

Thanks for the memory jog, I

Thanks for the memory jog, I remember reading those now. I don't know about an update on any specific department but an expose on their excellent customer service might be in order. I have never and I repeat never been in there for more than 60 seconds or 25 feet which ever comes first without hearing "can I help you find what you're looking for?" Dangit I wish I could get my employee's to do that and stick to it.

In my shopping there I have received detailed treatise's from their employee's from Gun's to padlocks. That's not to mention the detailed instructions I have received when I rented something from them. Basically if you ask a question boy will you get an answer.

Can you tell us what sort of

Can you tell us what sort of business you have without exposing your identity? Management sets the tone of the sales floor and the owner at Russells is on the sales floor and knows what is happening. If I ask a question, I want an answer and love Russell Hardware for the way they take care of their customers. No serious business allows the use of cell phones by employees at the cashier stand. You never have to wait for one of them to get off the phone to help you.

Sherry, I totally

Sherry, I totally understand. And Gene (if that's who I talked to) never gave me anything but the best impression of your store! Honestly, he was nothing but helpful and polite; he just happened to be the bearer of bad news. I totally understand your plight; if something doesn't sell, it's not smart to stock it. I just wish there was more of a demand for the equipment so I could buy it locally. There is no bad blood here with True Value, I promise!

I sincerely apologize if my comment was taken the wrong way.

Thank you, Computer

Thank you, Computer Speakers. I didn't take any offense in your comments and I totally understand your plight. I truly wish we could be of more help to our community and repay our gratitude for the support the community has given to us. Clayton and I attempt to stay in business and compete with the big box stores, but our resources as a Mom and Pop store are so very limited. Again, we will do anything we can to special order items you need.

Thanks for your support,
Sherry

We were there day before

We were there day before yesterday and Barry hunted us some merchandise. It is in Del Rio today. Thursday to Saturday, thanks for your type of service. We are there fairly regularly to shop and always enjoy the "can do" attitude of your people.

Thank you, Mr. Taylor.

Thank you, Mr. Taylor. Barry is a terrific guy and a wonderful employee. We are very frotunate to have many great people working for us and we feel like they are just part of our family. I have recently lost one of our employees ( I feel like she was my own child) due to a move and will be losing another one of my employees (again, she is just like one of my own children) to a move, also. If you know of any serious minded ladies that want to work a 40 hr. work week, please send them my way.

Thanks again,
Sherry

Sherry, How about a POSITIVE

Sherry,
How about a POSITIVE comment on your wonderful store? On July 18th, my red-headed Grandson came to visit his Pappo. He told me that he thought he was old enough to have his first knife - I agreed. We went to your wonderful store, and went to see Gene. Gene talked to Jarod and showed him, God only knows, how many knives. Gene asked him countless questions, made friends with him and went into great detail about knife safety. Jarod FINALLY picked his choice, and then he wanted to see all the sharpening devices. Again, Gene brought them all out, and we chose two different systems. Gene then took the time to show Jarod how to sharpen his new knife.

Jarod had a delightful time and really took a liking to Gene. How many stores offer such services? THAT is why I've been a LIFE-LONG customer, and will be till the day I die. It was a "Special" moment for a Grandfather and Grandson, and one that will live with him forever. I also told Clayton that HIS Dad was the one who showed me how to shapen a knife many, many moons ago. Now that is an amazing story to me!!

On the way out of the store we visited with Betty and your great husband. They all delighted in talking to Jarod and making him feel pretty special!

Please tell Gene how VERY much I appreciated what he did for my grandson! When Jarod got back home to Austin, that was all he talked about and INSTRUCTED his Pappo to be sure and THANK his new friend, Gene, and to tell him "Hello" for him! That is a very powerful indictment of Gene's impact on my Grandson!

The ONLY thing poor Jarod missed was meeting the owner's LOVELY wife, but maybe next time?

Love you guys and thanks. I am always just an email, or call away from your family in time of need.

PITBULL and nstrong, Thank

PITBULL and nstrong,

Thank you!!!!!!!!! We love what we do and feel very lucky to have a great customer base that we like to refer to as our "friends". Please let us know how we can help in the future, and I will consider it an honor.

Your friend,
Sherry

I must chime in here. I

I must chime in here. I recently rented some equipment to do some serious housework and the 2 gentlemen that helped me were fantastic. They answered my billion and one questions, retrieved some cleaning solutions, and loaded it all up in my SUV. Then I realized I needed the equipment for more than the alloted time so I called in to make arrangements, I was actually thanked for letting them know. They even explained that I could take up to a week for no extra charge. These guys were GREAT!!

I love shopping for special occasions and just because gifts. I actually need to make my way there in the next week or so and help my soon-to-be sister in-law get started on her bridal registry.

Thank you for all that you do for your patrons, it is deeply appreciated!

I agree with Pitbull, I

I agree with Pitbull,

I enjoy doing business with your store because of the personnel. I applaud you for your personalized service.

Absolutely a great store

Absolutely a great store Sherry. My wife and I buy all our special occasion gifts from you guy's and the only gun that I didn't by from you I regretted, [won't happen again I can tell you that].

Oh and I forgot to mention this when we spoke the other day, but whenever I have to get on my employee's about their customer service [or lack thereof] and they think I am asking too much of them, I tell them to go to your store to see how to do it the right way. No one else in DR seems to be able to pull it off the way you guy's do. Heck I can't even do it.

Terrific store! Wonderful,

Terrific store! Wonderful, helpful sales folks. I've seldom failed to find what I needed. You know, living in a small community requires a certain mindset. You appreciate low travel times, friendly sales people, and knowledge of product as opposed to a huge selection, tons of people to juggle around, and wait time for service. Both have drawbacks, of course. One must decide on his priorities. I've been frustrated too many times in large stores, with thousands of products on display, but not having the one exact item I wanted. Go figure. We have become a very selfish society, unwilling to wait for anything. And goodness knows, we don't know how to "make do" anymore. If I had to live in a large city again, I'd probably behind bars for road rage or something equally reprehensible. Dang, I love this town!

Dream come true for Del Rio and our Community! wave.gif

We went to Bumby’s Family Farm this morning at 10:30 and had a blast! The weather was just right, overcast, and cool and we didn’t even break out in a sweat. The animals are well taken care of and very friendly with the visitors. You can also feed them, the first cup is free and only $1.00 for an extra cup. We also played a round of miniature golf, nice set up for you mini golf pros.
One of the other features I liked was the sling shot water balloon contraption. If it gets too hot, that is where you want to be to cool off and if you get hungry, there is a plentiful supply of hot dogs, chips and sodas.
This is great fun for young and old, I guarantee, you will have a blast. The easiest way to get there is to go down hi-way 90 west and turn right at the Ford car dealership. Follow the country road for about 1.5 miles and it will be there on the left side, you can’t miss it.

It's great for parties, gatherings or meetings!
They have a large party room.
They sell hot dogs, chili dogs, chile bags etc.
They have swings for the children
They're all lit up at night for mini golf etc.etc.

This wonderful place is right here in good old Del Rio!
Go and have a good time!

I have lived here for a year

I have lived here for a year and a half and while I think this city is filled with great people, I count the days until Im gone. I work heavy hours and when I am off I need entertainment, maybe its because I was raised in a big city but this town offers nothing for that. I have children in my family that come stay with me and I have to take them home early because they feel its like chinese water torture being in Del Rio. The town is in a catch 22, its big enough to have the need for entertainment, but the people of the town on average dont have the income to support it....yet. Lets face it the average person in this town makes peanuts compared to bigger towns and you cant expect them to be able to afford to spend the money it takes to take your kids for a weekend of fun and games($75-$300).

It's been a week already

It's been a week already guys. You say that I complain...Look at your posted. What is this, Monkey see Monkey do? It was a suggestion....start a topic of interest. Start somthing new....see where that goes. I'm just a vistor here....you're the guru's. Start us off with some excitement, because this threads gettin old.

Don't take it

Don't take it personally.
Anytime someone brings this up it ends the same.
I did similar a while back and people got all up in arms. Going so far as to say kids don't need anything and how they remember playing in vacant lots or similar.
Then there is the whole "do something about it!" posts, as though getting funding and similar can just be done on a whim.
Sure, there are some things for kids here but it is limited. Bumpy's is one of the best things to come around in awhile. The Spot is a lot better these days. Movies are still very affordable compared to other cities. They have put up a few new playground sets throughout the city. The lake is there, the springs are there and there are sports throughout the year. There isn't a complete absence of things, but there is a lack of variety. You can only do things so many times. Depending on age groups you are also limited as well.
I'm greatly aware a town of this size can not have a Sea World, a Zoo or draw concerts/shows like other cities...at the same time though it just makes sense to me to try and cater more towards families. Especially if you want to draw families here and/or keep them here.
It's fine with me though, it's become apparent that few in Del Rio seem to like money. I'll keep giving mine to San Angelo, Eagle Pass and San Antonio. Matters not to me.

So are your repititive

So are your repititive posts. You did start a topic of interest, but it's been visited here a gazillion times.

We're not "gurus"; we're what you call residents by choice.

Does that tell you anything about how we view mouth-foaming newcomers who are not going to be here long enough to help do anything about our problems.

In short this thread was boring from the start. We do have problems in Del Rio but the priorities are not the superficial ones that pale by comparison to street repairs, some (not all) filthy politicians, and the ranchers or racists that support them?

Go to Del Rio Soapbox. You can whine online to your heart's content.

Don't hate on the temporary

Don't hate on the temporary "mouth-foaming" newcomers. I wonder what Del Rio would be like without LAFB. The military and their families are an important part of this town too. Grannychingthing, do you remember what it was like to have small children and want for them to be happy and have fun things to do? Or do you even have any children? Having fun, wholesome things for children (both young and older) may keep them out of trouble. As far as helping with the teen pregnancy rate here, it may just give the kids something better to do with their time.

Anyone who "hates on" the

Anyone who "hates on" the wonderful folks at Laughlin is a fruitcake! I "love on" those folks, and not just for the economic impact of the base. Together, they are a culture of intelligence, pride, patriotism, unfathomable skills and professionalism, refreshing by any standard.

Who I decry are folks who, for WHATEVER reason, move to town, look around quickly and say, "There's nothing to do here," and start counting the days to when they can leave. No question but what kids need things to do, but there invariably are more opportunities than the severest critics have bothered to discover, because some people just like to whine rather than get involved and actually make a difference.

God help us, that means commitment, and that's the last thing whiners want to do. Need for more things to do for kids notwithstanding, only positive attitudes, constructive suggestions and personal involvement are going to make a dent in hormonal urges combined with poverty-level home incomes and parents who have given up.

Anyway, Devoted, no one is picking on Laughlin. Quite the contrary. But individuals from any of a dozen or more federal and state agencies, maquila industries, and construction contractors (among others) that don't give our community a chance and just want to rail without the facts are unpleasant and need a wake-up call.

And finally, Flame's rant shows that all the whiners are not new kids in town. She/he had been here 15 years and is clueless about why people end up in Del Rio. Many, many retirees settled here because of what they came to love about the place, including a multicultural community with easy access to a fairly safe border community that loves us as much as we love Laughlin, relatively low cost of living, generally clean air and pristine water, a giant lake and mostly friendly people when you take time to get to know them.

Years ago, we had a county judge, Ray Kirkpatrick, who once told me that he and his wife blew through Del Rio enroute to Big Bend, remarked on what they saw that they liked, turned around, came back and decided on the spot to retire here. He was a valued member of the community, and nearly single-handedly kept the wrecking ball away from the county courthouse when the roof caved in. "There were commissioners who wanted it down, and I told them 'Over my dead body.'" Kirkpatrick is an example of someone (like many, many others) who came here almost by accident, stayed by choice, and committed to his new hometown.

It was a bit of an

It was a bit of an adjustment after moving here about 2 1/2 years ago. A big change from the northeast where pretty-much anything my children or I would want to was less than an hour drive away. It took some time to figure out how we would occupy ourselves here. My kids love the new playground down the street at the Buena Vista park area. They also really enjoyed the Whitehead Museum downtown. They were very interested in looking at the different exhibits, especially in the barn. And getting them involved in different activities that are offered (like through the Firehouse downtown) helps a lot too. But we do spend most of our time playing in the backyard. (Sometimes go a little stir crazy.) There isn't an over abundancy of things for children to do but I'm not sure if that can be fixed. Maybe Flames wrote this to get some ideas/input on possible changes.

I can say that we have really grown to appreciate and enjoy the town of Del Rio. We LOVE the lake. It is beautiful! I have met some very nice people too. If given the chance to retire here I think my husband and I would seriously consider it. We will definately miss it when it is our time to go.

I also must add that we had our baby here at the hospital about 5 months ago and had an A ok experience there. (We were given the choice to go to Wilford Hall but we did it here instead and wouldn't change it.)

So what do bad roads, filthy

So what do bad roads, filthy politicians and yada yada yada have to do with anything kid related?
Oh that is right, absolutely nothing.

While you sit there behind your keyboard virtually seething you are doing absolutely nothing to help anything. You're doing little more than perpetuating what many "mouth-foaming newcomers" dislike most about Del Rio.

Not everyone is here by choice, not every one is native. Some people stick around by choice because they have seen those glimmers of hope or other highlights of the area. However some people need their eyes opened, so why not be constructive a bit and allow people to see why someone chooses to be here instead of belittling them with inane diatribes about nothing.
I guess it's more fun trying to live up to your cyber nickname than being an ambassador of civic pride which many seem to want to argue about but never show.

It's funny, time after time when someone brings damn near anything up...it seems every problem in Del Rio seems to be a standard defense. Let's argue about how great a place Del Rio is by just lambasting some pour soul with every problem in the city limits. BRILLIANT!

I'm surprised a new international bridge wasn't brought up too.

This sounds fantastic! I

This sounds fantastic! I hope a lot of whiners about "nothing to do in Del Rio" will see it. Whenever we see "poor, poor, pitiful me" flames such as Flame's, I can't help but think that they're deliriously happy in their misery, and haven't looked around.

To say that the city's playgrounds are all old and badly maintained is ignorant nonsense. The city and the Rotary Club of Del Rio just installed beautiful new play complexes at Rotary Park, Buena Vista and one other I can't remember.

And I'm guessing Flame hasn't bothered to look into the great children's programs at the Library on Spring Street, or the great Dinosaur Days and Archeology Days (both for kids) at the Whitehead Museum on South Main Street.

And Whirlwind is right, too, that kids should not be overindulged with bells and whistles all the time - like at Chunky Cheez - at the expense of walking with their parents along the San Felipe Creek, seeing the parades on Main Street, the Fourth of July Rotary Rodeo, summer classes at the Firehouse, swimming in the pools at Moore Park and Buena Vista, taking in the scenery and ancient cave paintings at Seminole Canyon State Park, fishing at Lake Amistad, and so on.

Let's face it, among those who want to be miserable with where they are, it's much easier to whine about "nothing to do" than to look hard at what there is to do and then act on it. Makes one wonder, doesn't it, why after 15 years of being such a hater of Del Rio, why Flame is still here. For her or his information, there are thousands of Del Rioans here who chose (gratefully) to retire or work here, after being transferred by companies or government agencies such as Customs, Border Patrol, National Park Service, the Texas Highway Department, and so on.

Somehow I don't see putt-putt and go-carts making a much of a dent in teen pregnancy. And most 14 year olds pregnant? Give me a break. Yeah, it's a problem, but diversions for young children aren't going to halt hormones among pubescent girls or make parents any better about guiding their teenagers.

You just gotta wonder why Flame is still here, and yet so uninformed or inactive about the features that attract so many to this community and do offer some great experiences for kids.

I think that as a city, we should promote "ecotourism" it's what's in and will always be!...and this is coming from someone young..f%&k the clubs!

Government Baby....that's

Government Baby....that's the ONLY reason why I'm still here. You are right about the parks...the FINALLY put a new one at the rotary park. After HOW long? And even then kids were getting hurt because our fine city workers don't know how to install it right. LOL

The only thing that keeps this city afloat is the Base and the BP. If they go...then Del Rio, will really be known as little mexico. Oh wait...it already is.

Methinks you need a real

Methinks you need a real attitude adjustment. You're here, you're earning a paycheck, you do have the option to seek employment elsewhere. And if you think you can't do that, that the hand that feeds you is HERE, sit down and shut up. Be grateful for small favors--for one, that you wake up every morning and have a job to go to. If you can't solve the probem, then don't be a vocal part of it.

In short, quitcherbitchin.

Well Flame, put your money

Well Flame, put your money where your wishes are. Go and take out a loan and start one of those places that you have suggested.

Now I don't disagree with you on the bit about needing things for the kids to do. There are however, some things that you need to consider before you blame others for not investing in what you see is necessary. First off this town will not support putt putt golf, go carts etcetera in a fashion that will ensure their continued operation. Basically people want big city bling with their entertainments and neither this community nor the surrounding communities can support that at this time. Second, several of the things that you mentioned have been tried and have failed and all for various reasons. Third, I can think of about a half a hundred reasons to "not" develop a place for Teenagers [without their legal guardians] to [hang] out, gossip and get on the internet. The lawsuits would come hard and fast. This doesn't mean that it can't be done but the thought of it gives me the heebie jeebies.

If you and I keep our fingers crossed we may get a Super Gatti's. Now those things are a blast and the food's good unlike Peter Piper and upChuky Cheese. Skip's being pretty mum about things right now but when I mentioned it to him he just grinned.

Oh and you're dead wrong as to the reasons "why" people come here. I'm sorry that you're a little disgruntled but I love being here. I have been elsewhere and I can say with certitude that the proverbial "grass" ain't greener over there. Each and every community has it's warts and ours is no exception. But if you allow yourself to believe that everywhere else is the exception then you are going to be very disappointed.

Amen! Del Rio is a GREAT

Amen! Del Rio is a GREAT place to live. Do folks no longer have back yards? Do children always have to be "entertained" with superficial/plastic/electronic gizmos? Why does one feel compelled to "go" somewhere to find entertainment and food???

Thank you both on your

Thank you both on your opinions.

Backyards are boring, entertainment here consists of bars. This town needs more. That is why many "go" somewhere else for luxarys. This town just doesn't have it. Hopefully something will good will come out of this town, besides the air force base. And even that is going to pot.

Freedom of Speech is great. Don't you just love opinions?

Flame, I would like to point

Flame, I would like to point out that one of the great things about this town is that people "can" afford those luxury's. The low cost of living coupled with a halfway decent wage base and the promise of growth enables this. So exactly what's "going to pot" on the base? Lord knows that I've been wrong before, but It's my understanding that there are new quarters going up along with other improvements, is this not correct??

Hey--you can even imbibe in

Hey--you can even imbibe in your own backyard. Drinks are cheaper there, too. For ambience, watch the traffic.

Well, Flame, seems as if

Well, Flame, seems as if you've filed a minority report, and the majority is no longer "silent". Yep, opinions are great. But, as the saying goes, they're like posterior orifices. Everyone's got one and no one else cares - at least until ignorance becomes an insult that can do harm.
