You know something, this is
You know something, this is a pretty dang good number of votes (325), it gives a nice percentage of the community. Most polls that we see and read about number in the few hundreds, so based on this I would say that Sheriff Jernigan is likely to keep his post. I have watched these polls on Live and they have always given an accurate read of this community's consensus. Mayor Valdez won the vote on Live and he won the election, Larson won primary as did he the vote on Live, very interesting. Look up old polls to verify.
If it ain't broke, don't fix
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This Sheriff ain't broke, to my knowledge.
I get it, "What is a
I get it,
"What is a sheriff?" Is another of Joe's attempt to do his comedy act. And those who chose that answer are also trying to do comedy, here's one for you, don't give up your day job!
If you really know Joe you
If you really know Joe you would know that there is hardly a funny bone in his body. Joe has been considering running for sheriff for a long time now, ever since his father had the dream of becoming sheriff of Val Verde County some 23 years ago. This is something that Joe would be great at, and serve the community more than anyone could expect.
I think he was referring to
I think he was referring to former Live publisher Joe Hyde and not Joe Frank Martinez.
On a similar note...MARTINEZ FOR SHERRIF!
I agree......MARTINEZ FOR
I agree......MARTINEZ FOR SHERIFF VOTE 11/4/08!!!!!!!
I'm gonna go out on a limb
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, with 597 votes, 50% of the votes being for Jernigan and 47% for Martinez that Jernigan will win the election. I have watched the poll on Live on many issues and in particular election issues, Live polls have been spot on 100% of the time. To be honest, I did not know anything about Martinez had it not been for Live. I have only learned of his name on this site.
If you want to learn more
If you want to learn more about him you can visit his website (which you can get to directly from clicking on his ad on this site) where it lays everything out from his career as a law enforcement officer to crime statistics for the county. www.joemartinez4sheriff.com
I agree in part with what
I agree in part with what texascurve is saying about incumbents. However I still have not had my question about the 8 liners answered. Why did it take the Sheriff so long to shut them down? Why did there have to be a very public outcry for it to happen? If the good Sheriff can give me a good answer he will have my vote.
Well AP, Isn't it time for
Well AP,
Isn't it time for you to practice what you preach, isn't the solution as simple as picking up the phone and calling the sheriff and posing the question to him directly. You seem to always profess to others that they should just contact the source, besides, do you think maybe investigating the 8 Liners, their locations, and their offenses took a little time? I remember that it wasn't very long before they actually shut them down, a couple of months? That's not a long time for something like that which requires some diligence.
I'm not even sure the Sheriff reads SWTexasLive.
Actually nstrong, I have
Actually nstrong, I have been trying to catch up with him. I haven't been able to do so, so far. And no he hasn't been avoiding me or anyone else. We just haven't been in the same place at the same time "yet". When I get the chance to pose my question to him personally I will post his response here. If it takes too long to just run into him, you can believe that I will set an appointment.
And no I don't believe that our Sheriff reads Live.
Here's a principle I have
Here's a principle I have lived by when it came to voting. If an incumbent is doing a good job I have always voted for the incumbent. There is no need to change unless the incumbent in that position is not performing in that capacity to the satisfaction of the citizens. Sheriff Jernigan is doing a great job.
What exactly does a "good
What exactly does a "good job" consist of?
Well, many things starting
Well, many things starting with harmony and team work within the department (something that can't be said for the police department or the fire department, certainly not for county or city government), leadership, care for the community, excellent relationship with state and federal government, and the ability to keep this community safe where he has jurisdiction. He worked very hard and was able to increase the pay from $20K to $30K for his deputies; he was able to recruit people that are dedicated and hardworking. He showed great poise and character when disasters occurred, be it the flood, or 9/11. And last but not least, he knows how to get grants and get federal help where we need it. Those are some of the things I am aware of that make for A "GOOD JOB"
Now that is a well reasoned
Now that is a well reasoned argument, thanks.
And here I thought all my
And here I thought all my arguments were "well reasoned", Oh well. Thanks for your acknowledgement. I appreciate you not jumping on me for this post, it seemed, for a period of time, that no matter what facts I stated or what personal opinion I gave, were not sufficient for you. I’m waiting for Whirlwind’s approval next, ha ha!
You got it, TC!
You got it, TC!
I have not considered
I have not considered looking at it this way, that's a fresh thought worthy of consideration. I guess I will be casting my vote in favor of the incumbent whom I have heard nothing but good things about.
