On Saturday, April 26, the Diablo East area of Amistad National Recreation Area will be the site of the local observance of National Junior Ranger Day and Safe Kids USA Day. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and there is no cost. Amistad National Recreational Area, Lake Amistad Resort & Marina and Safe Kids Val Verde are joining together to bring this special children’s event to the local area.

The theme for the 2008 National Junior Ranger Day is “Explore, Learn, Protect: Be a Junior Ranger.” The Junior Ranger program at Amistad NRA is designed primarily for children 7 – 11 years of age but all children are welcome. To become a Junior Ranger, children will complete a booklet as they participate in such activities as a guided nature hike, water safety talk, hands-on archeology, etc. When their booklet is complete, the new Junior Rangers will receive a certificate and a badge or patch. Lake Amistad Resorts and Marina will provide free boat rides to new Junior Rangers and their families in recognition of their participation in National Junior Ranger Day.

NOTE: There will be a guided nature hike at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The water safety talk will take place at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. All other activities, both Junior Ranger Day and Safe Kids Day, will be ongoing from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Hot dogs and sodas will be available at no charge. Children should wear tennis shoes – no open-toed sandals.

Safe Kids USA launches Safe Kids Week 2008 on April 26 and will focus on celebrating 20 years of creating a safer world for kids and promoting efforts to make further progress to protect children from accidental injuries. As part of this special event, children and their families will have the opportunity to try a number of fun and educational hands-on activities dealing with pedestrian and water safety as well as correct use of smoke alarms and seat belts.

Amistad National Recreation Area, Lake Amistad Resort & Marina and Safe Kids Val Verde have a common goal when it comes to children: To teach them about the world around them and how to explore and enjoy it safely.
