Feature WriterKyra Fuller, 9, may be the most grateful and determined graduate of the Pecos River Kids day camp program at Shumla School. Tuesday (Feb. 6), Fuller turned over $125 reflecting her gratitude for an awesome day at the desert campus to Dr. Carolyn Boyd, Shumla School founder and executive director.
The Buena Vista Elementary School fourth-grader attended the 2006 Pecos River Kids program in which nearly all San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District fourth graders participate. Fuller told her grandmother, Virginia Lowe, that she wanted to help the continuation of the experience-based, hands-on workshops and demonstrations.
Fuller enlisted the aid of her brother, Tristan Fuller, 7, to collect donations for Shumla School, and the pair received help, according to Lowe, from Brown Automotive and numerous friends and acquaintances. Boyd greeted Kyra and Tristan at Buena Vista Elementary School Tuesday to thank them for the generous and thoughtful gift.
“This will buy [curriculum and lesson] notebooks for two classes of Pecos River Kids,” said a grateful Boyd, adding that the gift will provide those materials to about 150 children. Boyd commented that Kyra’s gift is proof positive that the PKR program is a source of educational inspiration for nearly all children who attend the increasingly popular programs.
“It tells us that we’ve impacted her life in a very positive way,” Boyd said.
To show the Shumla School’s gratitude, Boyd invited Kyra, Tristan, and Lowe to attend an April 7 Members Appreciation Open House at the school. “Have you ever tasted buffalo? Boyd asked Kyra. The day will include a special guided tour to see ancient rock art in Rattlesnake Canyon, followed by a feast of bison stew at the Shumla Pavilion.
Buena Vista Elementary School Principal Paula Bostwick was caught by surprise during the presentation. “I didn’t know anything about what Kyra was doing, but this is wonderful,” she said. Bostwick estimates that about 250 Buena Vista fourth-graders have attended Pecos River Kids programs at Shumla.
Boyd invites anyone interested in knowing more about the school’s programs to contact the Shumla offices in Comstock, 432-292-4848, or to see the school’s Web site, www.shumla.org .
