The stupid-looking signs on Bedell

By screwdriver - Posted on July 3rd, 2006
I drove down Bedell Ave this afternoon and I almost puked. Those "banners?" are not only stupid-looking, they are too small to read while you drive. We are not a third world country and we don't need to look like we are. What's next, "the running of the bulls" or "a cheese roll?" Whoever thought this one up should be tied to one of the poles like his (her) project!!!

Okay seriously people. I

Okay seriously people. I know this town sucks and you all apparently hate the way it looks, but you don't see me b!@#$@&$ about it. Get over it or get out, and stop all your damn whining.

Okay, well I have a GREAT

Okay, well I have a GREAT idea! How about those who want their signs down, they do belong to them since they paid for them, request for them to come down when the city takes down the Christmas (winter holiday) decorations. The crews will be right there, within arms length to do the good deed! I hope some of you request this soon, so we can be Border Beautiful!

Well Border Beauty, I really

Well Border Beauty, I really wish that I were that easy. Bear with me here. The sponsors of those signs do not own them. The city owns them. So when you call the City, they will tell you that the signs were paid for or sponsored, for a certain period of time and since the time isn't up yet they can not breach contract with the sponsors and remove them. When the buisiness owners call to have their name taken down on the specific signs that they sponsored we are told that we don't own the signs and that the City does. When I called to have mine removed and was told this I simply pointed out to them that they already breached contract by moving them from the place that I was told that they were going to be placed. And that they could take mine down or give me my money back. Two days later mine was down. But they simply replaced it with another one from some other sponsor. Many other business owners besides myself have attempted to have the signs removed and they have been stymied at every turn.

I drove thru hondo yesterday

I drove thru hondo yesterday and they have the same signs on hwy 90....
i guess the same people sold them advertising and will have to move them away from a state hwy....

So does Castroville....but

So does Castroville....but theirs don't seem to be advertising. Check them out the next time you make a trip to S.A. Oh, and by the way, when the city took down the Christmas decorations on Main Street, they forgot to turn the stupid, eyesore, junky signs back the right way! What a joke and a sorry way to cutter up the streets.

Bon appetite,
Erica

And how about that lousy

And how about that lousy sign on top of the Del Rio National bank downtown? It might be just my eyesight but to me it looks like they designed it to be hard to make out.

Mayor,clean up the city.

Mayor, clean up the city. Why can't we get new lights, or Christmas decorations. These are the same ones Year after Year. If the guys are going to put them them up, they should at least put the ones that work, not the ones that don't. It is very simple, why hasen't this been done??????? Here is your chance Mr. Mayor, to make sure Del Rio has new lights.

Why should the Mayor clean

Why should the Mayor clean up those signs? He didn't put them there. They were put there by the previous administration who bombarded the local business owners to place these signs for advertisement and tourisim and get everyone to Del Rio, but the business owners and the City were bamboozeled!

I am glad Bill Sontag updated the info on this subject so we can all rest and shut the H up until May when the dam signs can be brought down to their resting place.

Is there anything worthwhile to complain about besides those signs? If they bother you all that much don't look up! KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD.

I am visiting this fine city

I am visiting this fine city over the Christmas break and noticed those cluttery banners while doing some errands. I noticed the ruckus they've caused and perhaps rightfully so. Well, I collect city memoribilia for my middle school classroom in Wisconsin. I'll pay shipping for the first one to be sent to Herr Force 1, Room E85, 600 Elm St. Neenah WI 54956! I'd just love to display Del Rio in the classroom and help mediate a situation in SW Texas! :-)

My offer still stands :-)

My offer still stands :-)

lol that is a good idea but

lol that is a good idea but i doubt they will give one to you. Maybe you can stand underneath them tommorrow night(its supposed to be windy) and catch one of them as they fall to the ground.

Well, Smiley, I think with

Well, Smiley, I think with the sheer number of banners rivaling the number of "flowers" on Bedell, someone could snatch one and send it to the above address! Thanks Del Rio for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation!

How about taking the ones

How about taking the ones down Main Street too. Just completely eyesores!

Someone should give tickets

Someone should give tickets to every business that have one too... I can not believe the local business leaders have not asked to get their sign removed....Trash Signs, and they are wrong...

I assure you that, as Amor

I assure you that, as Amor pointed out in his reply, I personally have asked for our business signs to be taken down once I realized that what we were sold was not what got delivered!

This was certainly a blunder that the city of Del Rio administration and staff should never have sponsored! I was absolutely misled and misrepresented the facts by the sign company.

Many of the business people

Many of the business people have requested "and multiple times I might add" for the signs that they have sponsored to come down. Pls remember the idea of the signs was sold to the businesses and the City of Del Rio as a sponsorship to promote the City. This "banner" idea was sold to the businesses like Girl Scout Cookies are sold to people on the street, as a way to benefit a greater good. Basically for purchasing a very small "piece of a sign" the business would sponsor a larger part of the sign publicizing the City of Del Rio for a year for the purposes of promoting Del Rio to tourists that were passing through on Veterans BLVD. That "placement area" ran into legal issues that the sign company did not fully disclose to the businesses that contributed to the promotion, thus the move of the signs to Bedell from Veterans. Everyone that paid for a sign did it to help the City or at least so we were told. Now that they have become a detractor to both the city and our businesses I and several of my friends have requested that they come down. Mine was taken down only to be re-placed by another sign from another company. And to the best of my knowledge the other businesses requests have been, for the most part, ignored. In fact I believe that one businessman in particular is contemplating a lawsuit for removal of his sponsored signs and the return of the monies invested from the sign company.

I do chalk this up to one of life’s many ironies. In that we the businesses tried to help but are now being blamed for the miscarriage that is partly to blame upon the city and more so upon the sign company. Sigh, I will attempt again to get the City to pull them down this week. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I have a feeling however that I will be just as unsucessful as I have in the past. I do not "own" the signs the City does. But the City can counter with the fact that others have paid for them and thus the City can not order them to be taken down. Hopefully all the sponsors will contact the City and complain.

Correct the LIGHTS Del

Correct the LIGHTS Del Rio....Now the pole signs on Main Street are now affecting the Christmas Decorations...I can not believe your City has no more sense than this to hang the Christmas light backwards this year due to the dumb signs...If I own a building downtown I wouldn't permit the sign to be in front of my building...

Wouldn't permit? You do not

Wouldn't permit? You do not own the poles, you wouldn't be able to do anything, except being considered an a......

Can someone tell me when the

Can someone tell me when the stupid signs on Bedell are coming down? Looks like some are coming down with any help...

Please clean up your city...Visual pollution....Why are not the owners of these sad signs demmaning them to come down?

The City of Del Rio signed a

The City of Del Rio signed a contract with Texas Municipal League to allow CGI Communications, Rochester, N.Y., to market the sale of those banners to local businesses. The city itself invested in them.

They were installed in May, and are slated to remain in place for one year, according to CGI Marketing Director Gail Kruger in conversation with me today (Nov. 7). She had not been apprised of any maintenance problems with them, but pledged to notify the appropriate division chief in her office, and arrange for repairs.

CGI also produced free puff-piece videos as "welcome" messages to Del Rio to be put on the city's Web site. To date, the city has not given their approvals of the videos, nor have they appeared on the City of Del Rio Web site.

Several calls to Asst. City Manager Billy Guerra have gone unanswered. You may look at the CGI Web site by going to http://www.elocallink.com/cgi/

If anyone has a kid working

If anyone has a kid working towards Eagle Scout, tearing down that road clutter sure would be a great environmental project. I hate them. I loathe the person who thought up the idea. They're worse than billboards. Anything that's placed 50 to 75 feet in the air with a selling message on it is not effective marketing/advertising. It's invitation to eyes off the road and a wreck. Who has bought anything from a billboard or street sign? Anyone? The only thing I've ever read a billboard for is what exit number to take for a clean restroom along the Interstate. I say shred the damn signs and use them as toilet paper at city hall.

Okay, so they are tacky. I

Okay, so they are tacky. I came to Del Rio a few years ago and just now realized what the logo for Del Rio is. The Dam....wow, it doesn't even resemble one and looks utterly rediculous on those signs. Any one game for an upgrade to the city logo?

Amen Brother!

Amen Brother!

I'm with you on this one. I

I'm with you on this one. I came into town with a friend a while back and spent 10mins trying to explain what the thing on the Water Tower was. I was just a little embarassed by the end of the conversation. We dont need a P.R. firm we just need some people with a clear head and definitely not the ones that designed that monstrosity in front of Laughlin. You know..... the one you can only see from 1000ft up.

I was recently back in Del

I was recently back in Del Rio to bury my mother. All the way down Bedell all I could think of is I can't believe these tacky signs!! So glad I no longer live in what was my birth place and home for many years. Del Rio has just turned into a dirty filthy border town.

I wonder how long the signs

I wonder how long the signs will be up?

I have to agree. They're

I have to agree. They're too small and too many. Tacky, tacky, tacky. But, it seems they fit in with the Del Rio sign ordinance. Oh wait, does Del Rio have a sign ordinance? I'm guessing "no" by the proliferation of signs on Veterans. Look at the businesses with not just one or two signs but five, six or more for one location. Then there's the businesses that haven't been there for years with big ol' signs still there. Who will notice any one sign? There's just way too much visual clutter. What a great sight to greet the tourists the Chamber of Commerce so values.
