LIVE! in print: the July 2006 Issue
LIVE! explores the upcoming water wars from several perspectives.
What Price, Water?
Del Rioans may legitimately rejoice in the abundance of clean, clear, cool spring water that bubbles up from miles of limestone passageways and subterranean latticework just east of the city. But is it forever? Who are the competitors for the waters of San Felipe Springs now, and in Del Rio’s future? And what, if anything, should be done about them?

Water Hopes, Fears Keenly Felt Here
There are about 90 groundwater conservation districts in Texas now, but not in Val Verde County. Two years ago, dispute between organizers of state-mandated legislation and the City of Del Rio typified the often contentious battles that can spoil a well-meaning effort to protect the most important resource in any community. Is this the time to make another effort? Civic leaders think so, and have stoked the fires beneath the boiler once more.

Dan Eason brokers water deals from his office in Uvalde, and envisions a scale of sales unattainable without changing Texas law first. Eason contends that education about the status of the sprawling Edwards Aquifer, and who’s conserving what and how much, are the keys to wise decisions about the uses of “surplus” water. There are parallels yet to be faced about water below Val Verde County, different in both scale and immediacy, but no less emotional and important when they arise. Eason believes residents here should be thinking about the consequences of their inaction now.

Have enjoyed your July issue
Have enjoyed your July issue of DelRioLive so very much. Especially happy that you have Bill Sontag on board. Never missed his articles in the Del Rio newspaper. The water articles were of high interest to us as we in Kinney County are having our problems also. The articles were written in my kind of language, I could understand what Bill was writing about. Keep up the good work, have been asking my friends if they have read the paper and if they have not I have strongly recommended that they do. Keep it coming. We need this sort of reporting. Pintobean

The Del Rio Live is nicely done. A large portion of credit needs to go to Bree Walker, an award winning graphic designer from San Angelo. The layout and designs are hers. She spent endless hours on the job and deserves a pat on the back!!
She and the San Angelo writer, Aaron Harris spent many hours putting it together and should be given some recognition.
Nice Job Bree, Keep it up!

I just read some of the articles. This publication is better than anything I've seen anywhere. Wonderful articles. When I get too old to sit out on this prairie by myself, maybe I can live in one of Nick's apartments! Can't wait to see a hard copy.
