Too Young to be Pregnant in Del Rio

Last school year, there were 41 pregnant students enrolled in the Life Skills for Students Parents in Del Rio's local school district. That's 41 out of around 3,000 including middle and high school students. What is being done to combat teen pregnancies in the region?

Organization aims to eradicate child abuse in the region

When it comes to child abuse in all its sinister forms, Baptist Child & Family Services representatives say it’s imperative that communities in their five-county region understand the ramifications and reporting responsibilities. April is National Child Abuse Prevention month, and BCFS is making a push to broaden comprehension of the tragic ramifications of maltreatment of children who are helpless to defend themselves.
 

Special Children's Activities Planned for April 26

National Park Service naturalists, Lake Amistad Resort & Marina staff, and Safe Kids Val Verde volunteers invite families to visit Lake Amistad, April 26, for a day of outdoor activities, important safety lessons, free boat rides for new Junior Rangers, and a nature hike. Kids can take home a Junior Ranger patch and certificate of new lessons learned.
 

Woman sculptor’s Texas roots tap into deep New Mexico waters

As with many Texans, Candyce Garrett has had her brush with the law in New Mexico, but she lives there happily nonetheless, working on monumental artforms when weather on the high desert permits. During the winter, Garrett sculpts massive granite pieces on the family ranch south of Sonora, keeping company with her mother, Rosemary Whitehead Jones.
 

Shumla School members forge new bonds, raise funds for kids

Friends, patrons, and employees of Shumla School celebrated the non-profit institution’s successes, preparing for the future with a members’ event Saturday (March 15) by accumulating nearly $6,000 with a robust auction. The gala event followed an afternoon of hands-on activities modeled after the school’s Pecos River Kids programs and a sumptuous dinner.

Del Rio’s homegrown superintendent leaving the top job, looking to the future

SFDRCISD Superintendent Bobby Fernandez decided several days ago to leave his post with the district, and began letting colleagues know of his decision early this week. Now, Fernandez asserts that he holds no hard feelings against members of recalcitrant board of trustees, that he takes great pride in his accomplishments in his nearly five years as superintendent, and that he has a mentoring role in mind for children in the future.
