City of Del Rio Finance Director Frances F. Rodriguez was asked Thursday afternoon to allow her name to be placed in nomination to serve as interim city manager. Rodriguez accepted, swiftly plunging into turbulent waters still roiling around the firing of city manager, Rafael Castillo Jr.
A consortium of Mayor Efrain Valdez, City Councilwoman Lisa Cadena Craig, and Councilman Mike Wrob recommended Rodriguez for the job. Valdez urged Rodriguez to take the position at 3:30 p.m., Thursday (Jan. 25). Chuckling, Rodriguez recalled, “I asked him if I could think about it for a little while.” By Friday morning, Rodriguez committed to take up the reins of managing the city, with help and support from Del Rio City Council. “I’m really honored to get the position, and I’ll certainly do my best,” Rodriguez told LIVE! A special city council meeting will convene Tuesday (Jan. 30) for members to discuss and act on an ordinance that would formally ensconce Rodriguez in the interim position.
She began her second career with the City of Del Rio in 1999, after 32 ½ years with the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District, beginning at age 19 and retiring as assistant superintendent for budget and finance. Rodriguez was chief accountant in her first position with the city, and quickly – within six weeks – rose to accept an interim position as chief of finance.
