This is in an eight-part series.
SFDRCISD schools: products of history, culture and vision
Public schools in Del Rio get a bad rap … unless you’re a worried parent who’s heard about racism, bullying, discipline meltdowns, exhausted teachers, unchecked dropout rates, and impoverished teaching equipment inventories. Much of the rumor mill may be uninformed or exaggerated. What cannot be overstated is that administrators and most teachers have talent and passion, arguably not matched with resources and parental commitment to develop the educated workforce Del Rio needs to grow responsibly.

What’s all the fuss about Comstock schools?
For any of a host of reasons, many Del Rio parents look for “alternative schooling” for their children. Last year about 120 Del Rio students were bused to Comstock each day to attend classes in the Comstock Independent School District’s new buildings, just completed thanks to a $4 million bond referendum powered by 86 percent voter approval. CISD Superintendent Kenn Norris shares with LIVE! his pride in the school’s accomplishments.

For several hundred Del Rio, Val Verde County and Ciudad Acuña families, private religious schools provide the only acceptable alternative to public schooling or homeschooling. Del Rio’s two pioneer private schools continue to thrive with second and third generations of students, now becoming traditions in regional blueblood families, yet attractive to government, military and other transitional families.

Schooling Out of the Mainstream: At Home
For more than 200 Del Rio and Bracketville schoolchildren, formal learning occurs at home, not in the classroom. Homeschooling families flourish, often the choice of Air Force families stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base. They are often misunderstood and viewed as odd renegades from perfectly acceptable, though imperfect, private or public schools. But the commonest stories emanating from homeschools are those of academic achievements and well-adjusted, confident graduates.

Whitehead Museum: Educators' 'common ground'
Val Verde County’s Whitehead Memorial Museum, a simulated frontier village sited on two acres of tree-shaded grounds in south Del Rio, is host to about 10,000 visitors annually, one of a handful of tourist destinations in the city. Moreover, the museum is an educational “tool” of nearly every school teacher, administrator and student for miles around, including featured programs of growing popularity scattered through the school year.

What the Little School House means to me

Protecting the tradition at Sonora High School
It should be a down year, relatively speaking, for the Broncos, as they lose 24 seniors from last season. Fans shouldn’t think the season will be a loss, however, because Sonora should still be poised to make a playoff run in the extremely difficult new District 8-2A. With their returning senior quarterback and solid coaching, the Broncos could be much improved with their untested players by the time their biggest games of the season roll around in weeks 9 and 10.

The Del Rio Rams are putting it all together
Getting better, bit-by-bit, is what the Rams have been striving to do the first three seasons under Jesse Treviño. While the wins and losses have improved, has the team made strides yet to compete for a playoff spot in the San Antonio based district? Coach Treviño thinks so, and hopefully with a healthy Mike Garcia this year, better home performances, and what they expect to be an improved defense, they can start to make things interesting in District 28-5A.
